[ARCHIVED] Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day - April 30, 2022

People dropping off waste

Jackson County will celebrate EARTH DAY by hosting its Annual “Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day” for Jackson County residents on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 8 a.m. – Noon in the Singing River Mall Parking Lot. Approximately 40 different types of items that are considered household hazardous waste will be accepted during this free one-day event, which will take place rain or shine.

Jackson County Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this turn-in by cleaning up around their houses and property and collecting of some of their household hazardous waste for proper disposal.

“This is considered a great way to continue to protect the environment and celebrate Earth Day,” Solid Waste Director Ronda Powell says. “Proper disposal of these chemicals and products are important to our health and our environment.”

Acceptable products should be left in their original containers. However, to help reduce expenses, water-based paints can and should be consolidated into as few containers as possible for the event. Empty water-based paint cans can be thrown into household garbage after the paint has dried.

Residents are also asked to ensure all containers are sealed and transported in the trunk or back of a vehicle away from passengers. This will keep everyone safe from toxic fumes and allow volunteers to remove the items without the need of anyone exiting the vehicle.

There are several items that will not be accepted including: explosive or radioactive materials, PCB’s, medical or biological waste, business waste, household garbage, electronic waste or compressed cylinders, no 55-gallon drums and tires are limited to 5 and must be off the rim.

The annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day event is a community service funded by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in cooperation with the Jackson County Board of Supervisors, Municipalities, and other in-kind services provided by local businesses and industries. This event would not be successful without the dedicated volunteers and the Jackson County Solid Waste Department.
